The Department of Performing Arts at the University of Ilorin was established in 1981 with an initial student body 16 and a pioneering faculty of three. The founding academic staff included Professor A. A. Mensah, Dr. Aka Nasiru (now Professor), and Mr. Yulisa Amadu Maddy, with Professor Mensah as the inaugural Head of the Department. In the subsequent years, the department saw steady growth and development, including adding Dr. (Mrs.) Zulu Sofola, who became the Head of Department in 1983. Over the years, numerous esteemed faculty members have contributed to the Department’s rich legacy, including Professor Ayo Akinwale and Dr. Bode Omojola. Former students, such as Professor S. E. Ododo and Dr. Abdul Rasheed A. Adeoye, have also returned to enrich the academic environment.
Our mission is to provide comprehensive education in Music, Dance, and Drama, reflecting the interconnected nature of these disciplines in African culture. We aim to nurture talented individuals who will excel in various fields, including the performing arts, culture and creative industries, education, journalism, and more. Our commitment is to foster a deep understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the performing arts, ensuring our graduates are well-rounded and versatile.
